New Life: Quarry Road

Regional Award Entry for Moray

New Life for Old Buildings

Extension to 1 Quarry Road, Elgin for Mr & Mrs C Park

Regional Award Entry

The modest extension (3.3 x 2.6m) proposed by Mr & Mrs C Park to extend their existing sitting/dining area off the rear kitchen was to provide a small additional area to their existing accommodation while also providing more privacy to their side/rear garden area which captured the sun in the late evening.

The design solution was to provide a small light and airy sun lounge area with a contemporary feel but which matched in with the suburban style of the existing property.

The design solution responded in different ways to each elevation to:
  • Firstly match in with the street frontage while providing discreet side access gate.
  • Secondly a full height interior space up to the underside of the pitched roof with gable glazing, sufficient to maximise the afternoon light but not over dominating the views out over the neighbour’s front garden.
  • Thirdly the rear elevation of fully glazed panels giving access on to a small raised patio area which leads down into a more utilitarian back garden.
The resulting extension lifts the existing property with a more contemporary feel while respecting the original house design.
